School Closing Guidelines    back to top

Schools are allowed no more than 2 snow days per school year. Any extra days must be made-up to ensure that the district meets clock hour requirements set by the state.

Mr. Fred Madden, Transportation Director, is responsible for checking the weather and driving the Covert roads to assess the conditions. Mr. Madden will make a recommendation to the superintendent if the busses will be able to get the students safely to and from school.

When winter storms are expected, Mr. Madden's day begins at 4:30AM. If he believes that there could be a safety issue in transporting our students, he calls the superintendent by 5:30AM. There are times when both Mr. Madden and the superintendent both drive the Covert roads to ensure the safety of the students and staff.

A decision to close school is made by 6:00AM. Once the decision is made, the superintendent notifies the radio stations and the television networks. The superintendent then calls the building principals and they begin a phone tree dialing system among staff members.

If a storm occurs while students are already at school, the district uses the same care to ensure that the students are transported safely home.
