Department Philosophy:
The Vocational Consumer and Family Sciences Department encourages the
development of a person as a responsible, independent individual and
contributing participant in society through essential living skills needed to
survive on a day to day basis, human relations, and life management skills
needed to meet the roles of each individual throughout his/her life cycle.
Course Descriptions:
Essential Health
– This course focuses on
health habits that are basic to everyday living and which contribute to the
total well being of the individual. The units are the 10 topics identified by the Michigan Model for Comprehensive
Health Education: disease
prevention and control, personal health practices, nutrition, growth and
development, family health, emotional and mental health, substance use and
abuse, consumer health, safety and first aid, and community health.
Consumer Education –
This required class
focuses on activities that are simulated and/or real life situations.
Examples of learning experiences include those for managing money, balancing a
checkbook, and the use of credit. The student will also focus on preparing a portfolio as one of the career
related skills.
Nutrition – Emphasis is placed on the
role of the diet in relation to physical and psychological health care.
The content of this course is based on the theme of nutrition for fitness and
well being as it relates to food selection, food habits, and simple food
preparation.
Family Living –
In this course skill
development and family issues in communications, life style changes, problem
solving, and coordination of work and family life are emphasized. This course involves the development and change of
individuals across the life cycle and deals with life styles, divorce, abuse,
and remarriage.
Parenthood – This course includes
parenthood as an informed choice. Selection of day care settings, television programs, and toys are examples of
topics. The emotional, physical,
social, and intellectual development of the child is emphasized. Actual experience in working with pre-school and elementary
age children is included.
Food Science – This course emphasizes the
relationship between food science, health, nutrition, and food preparation for
the diet. It focuses on the
chemistry of food preparation with hands-on food lab experiments.
Middle School Life Skills –
This middle
school class introduces the topics of health, nutrition, food preparation,
communications, sewing, clothing / fabric care, and child care with hands-on
simulated or lab experiences.
