Department Philosophy:

The Vocational Consumer and Family Sciences Department encourages the development of a person as a responsible, independent individual and contributing participant in society through essential living skills needed to survive on a day to day basis, human relations, and life management skills needed to meet the roles of each individual throughout his/her life cycle.

Course Descriptions:

Essential Health – This course focuses on health habits that are basic to everyday living and which contribute to the total well being of the individual.  The units are the 10 topics identified by the Michigan Model for Comprehensive Health Education:  disease prevention and control, personal health practices, nutrition, growth and development, family health, emotional and mental health, substance use and abuse, consumer health, safety and first aid, and community health.

Consumer Education – This required class focuses on activities that are simulated and/or real life situations.  Examples of learning experiences include those for managing money, balancing a checkbook, and the use of credit.  The student will also focus on preparing a portfolio as one of the career related skills.

Family Living – In this course skill development and family issues in communications, life style changes, problem solving, and coordination of work and family life are emphasized.  This course involves the development and change of individuals across the life cycle and deals with life styles, divorce, abuse, and remarriage.

Parenthood – This course includes parenthood as an informed choice.  Selection of day care settings, television programs, and toys are examples of topics.  The emotional, physical, social, and intellectual development of the child is emphasized.  Actual experience in working with pre-school and elementary age children is included.
