Covert Public Schools has an "In-School Suspension" (ISS) program for chronic rule violators. The students who attend ISS are given assignments from their classroom teachers to complete. Students are able to ask ISS staff for assistance. This way, students are still receiving educational instruction and are able to have supervision throughout the day.

Students are given strategies to avoid repeating the disruptive behavior(s) or action(s) which caused them to be assigned ISS. The ISS program and staff teaches students  life-long skills that can be used to handle real-world situations; students learn social skills which will aid them throughout their everyday lives.

Students have an opportunity to explain the incident that got them assigned to ISS; then they are asked if they want or need further help in dealing with these situations or problems beyond what the ISS staff can offer (i.e. anger management).
