Migrant and Bilingual Support
District Administration

The Hispanic population in Covert Public Schools has grown exponentially in the past 30 years.  Mr. Alfred Hawkins first requested help from the Van Buren Intermediate School District in the Spring of 1981. Binational Visit to Michoacan, Mexico – Spring 2008 - Under the auspices of the VBISD and the Binational Migrant Program, Ms. Meyer was able to meet with relatives of over 30 Covert families.

Migrant Education is a Title I C program funded by the federal government.  A migrant student is defined as one whose education has been interrupted due to a move made for the primary purpose of employment in a seasonal agricultural position.  Bilingual Education  - The state of Michigan, in accordance with federal law, mandates the provision of bilingual education in any district with 20 or more students whose first language is not English under Section 41 of the Michigan Department of Education. Scholarships & College Visits - Another service that we provide through the Van Buren Intermediate School District is the Incentive Scholarship Program (ISP).  We also encourage students to apply to Michigan State University for the College Assistance Migrant Program scholarship.
